"Ongoing programs: Programs started prior to 2023: Climate Book Club - Is a recurring program that brings together individuals with a shared passion for supporting and promoting sustainable living. The program revolves around learning, discussion, and the exchange of ideas, particularly through the exploration of literature related to sustainability, environmental issues, and solutions. The book club reads 4 books per year, and has over 60 members registered. Hub and Spokes Annual Bike Ride - This annual gathering brings together a diverse group of Calgarians from all over the city to experience the real value of our city’s active transportation network. Calgarians of all abilities, backgrounds and ages join us for a day of fun and environmental sustainability information, to ride, walk, and cycle Calgary’s pathway system. This program helps create a greater understanding of, and support for, Calgary’s pathways and cycle tracks, while enhancing social connections and community cohesion. Advocacy Campaigns - Working with the City of Calgary to ensure that climate mitigation and adaptation are addressed in City of Calgary policy. Past campaigns include Enmax Net Zero, City of Calgary Climate Strategy, Calgary Green Line (C-Train) Expansion, and 5A Active Transportation Cycling Infrastructure. New programs: Programs new in 2023: Forests for Calgary - Is a mini forest planting initiative of the Calgary Climate Hub that works to support ecosystem restoration, increase native forest habitats, and create community connections throughout our city using the Miyawaki Method. This program has activated over 300 volunteers, and close to 1000 hours of volunteer time. Forests for Calgary has also created an online Tree Equity Tool and Tree Planting Guide, to support the additional planting of intentional mini forests and trees throughout our city. Climate Bursary - This program offers three bursaries annually to post secondary students who are actively involved in the youth environmental movement, each valued at $250. This supports the education and development of individuals who are actively engaged in climate change work. Priority Advocacy Campaigns - Starting in 2023, members, board and staff identified five major climate areas to focus civic engagements. These areas are typically being addressed by City Council, and thus allow us to support members to speak up on municipal policy for climate outcomes. Volunteers design and enact the campaigns, with support from the Hub. Support provided by the Hub includes speaking at city council training sessions, community organizing, funding, and more. Currently, hundreds of volunteers are working on these campaigns to create meaningful climate impacts and increased climate awareness across our city."
