Every child deserves to have access to the life-changing benefits of reading. After a long period without government funding for school libraries, schools struggle to motivate their students to read when their collections are dated and tatty, and not representative of their diverse student population.
The Movement for Good grant will fund a transformative book-gifting project for three disadvantaged Irish schools, with lasting benefits for the entire school community. Every child deserves to have access to the life-changing benefits of reading. After a long period without government funding for school libraries, schools struggle to motivate their students to read when their collections are dated and tatty, and not representative of their diverse student population.
The Every Child A Reader book-gifting programme will deliver equitable access to the joy of reading to 1,153 children in disadvantaged communities. This evidence-based programme has a deep and lasting impact. It is expertly designed and implemented to enable positive, sustainable changes in primary school communities.
Every Child a Reader combines the following elements to inspire children to fall in love with reading:
• Schools receive comprehensive libraries of brilliant books and supporting materials.
• A Champion of Reading (a published author or illustrator) works regularly with students to instil joy around reading.
• We train teachers to make use of the library, and encourage families to build a culture of reading at home.
• We make reading part of the fabric of school life and create excitement for the school community.
