Greener and Cleaner helps local people make sustainable living easier (we deliver locally but think, and influence, nationally) by normalising 360-degree sustainable living so that the whole community feels empowered to take action in how they live, work, play, use their voice and make change.
The idea for our project has grown from conversations and experiences with local sustainability groups of all types and sizes across the UK, frustrated with the barriers they are facing and lack of connection. G&C will create a ground-breaking, new Community Sustainability Support Network (CSSN) initiative, designed to strengthen grassroots sustainability and resilience projects and spaces across England. By fostering collaboration; facilitating the cross-sharing of experiences, resources and advice; and by providing practical support to each other, we will empower local communities to more effectively tackle climate while also addressing cost-of-living, and significant wellbeing challenges. CSSN will strengthen local community groups and charities; the backbone of local sustainability efforts but often working in isolation and facing many barriers.
We're so excited to have the initial funding from Benefact to set up the Community Sustainability Support Network for England. Greener and Cleaner have been piloting for the past 3 years a model of community sustainability hubs in the heart of the community, working on projects for local residents, requested by local residents. We deliver services across the things which matter most to our community, whether concerned about cost of living, health, employability or loneliness and do so through the lens of sustainability. We've been talking to other groups across England (and the UK) throughout and we know that running community projects like ours can be really challenging, especially if we're doing it alone. The new CSSN pilot will give organisations across England, no matter how small or what areas of sustainability they cover, a place to come together, share learnings and templates and offer each other the support we all need to have the biggest impact we can.
