Shine

Our vision at Shine is for a Zambia where every child of primary age can read. We are a literacy-focused charity that provides reading programmes for poverty-stricken orphans and vulnerable children in Zambia, so that they become empowered to become fully educated, have better life opportunities and give back to their communities. To date, we have educated several thousand children from poor townships and villages in Zambia who would otherwise have limited access to education and therefore reduced opportunities for the future. A critical component of our reading programmes is the free lunch we provide to our pupils on a daily basis. For many, the meal they receive at Shine is the only one they will receive during the day. Our feeding programme ensures all 180 enrolled pupils at Shine's Literacy Centre receive a free meal, thereby driving high attendance and better educational outcomes. We are so grateful for the donation from the Benefact Group through the Movement for Good Award, as this will help us to buy the necessary raw materials and pay our local cooks for one full academic term. To put this in context, the Award will allow us to serve around 11,700 free meals to children living in poverty in Zambia so that we can effectively teach them how to read and help shape their future.
