Hastings Traditional Jack in the Green aims to promote, improve and advance the education in, and appreciation of, English traditional dance forms, traditional English folk music and song, folk tales and their associated seasonal customs. One way this is achieved is the through the staging of an annual folk arts festival in Hastings that benefits the local community and has worldwide supporters.
The donation from the Benefact Group will help pay for essential infrastructure to enable us to host our annual folk arts festival. This four-day event is organised by volunteers and celebrates the British Jack-in-the-Green folk custom. This donation will help towards running costs such as security, insurance and sanitation – things that we are required to provide as a community event. This donation allows us to host a public, free to attend celebration as the finale of the four-day event. It also enables us to offer community events and workshops in the runup to the event, and it helps keep costs low allowing access to all.
‘Coming on top of the Arts Council award we are of course delighted. I would like to thank everybody who nominated us. It will make things a lot easier for us as this is the first year we are managing the whole event on our own. We want to keep this as a free event for all but the toilets alone cost us £8000, so we are still in need of donations’.
