Dundee Heritage Trust

Registered charity number: SC002268
Dundee Heritage Trust (the working name of Dundee Industrial Heritage Ltd) is the proud guardian of two of the best-loved museums in Scotland. Together, we spark curiosity in heritage for over 80,000 people every year. Discovery Point is home of the globally significant Royal Research Ship Discovery, the ship built in Dundee in 1901 to pioneer world-first scientific research in Antarctica. Verdant Works is the fabric of Dundee, our Victorian mill where we preserve the sights, sounds, and skills of the industry that made Dundee, and made Discovery possible. Our purpose is to protect and share our heritage for the benefit of current and future generations. Our present, urgent mission is to conserve the the RRS Discovery for the next 100 years.

What our donation will help fund

Although less glamourous than an incredibly specific impact statistic, we chose to use this wonderful gift from the Benefact Group towards the everyday running costs of the charity. It takes so many dedicated people, two ramshackle old buildings, and always the right tools for the job behind-the-scenes to enable us to keep our museums open for tens of thousands of visitors every year. This kind of unfettered support is vital to help us do that, empowering us to adapt reflexively to what our collections and communities most need.

Dundee Heritage Trust is a long-standing charity in Dundee. We're proud to look after two of the city's top-rated museums, not least the iconic polar research ship Discovery, built in Dundee over 100 years ago and now the centre of its Waterfront. Most of all, we're about engaging people with that heritage, from life aboard the ship during some of the world's very first scientific expeditions to Antarctica, to life in the mills for thousands of Dundonians whose powered the city's industries over almost two centuries. Over the next couple of years, our biggest priority is our conservation project aboard Discovery, which will ensure we can keep the ship in good condition for many years to come.
