Starlight Arts

Registered charity number: 1201332
Starlight Arts provides opportunities for disabled adults to engage with music therapy, Makaton, drama, disability dance, life and social skills, arts and crafts and Lego® therapy. We provide opportunities for adults, who are often overlooked in society, to shine and gain confidence through the use of projects in the community, breaking down stereotypes within society. Our focus is on integrating our arts projects within the local community and this is important to us as a key value of Starlight Arts. Starlight Arts allows adults with disabilities to learn new skills, opening new doors to further opportunities.

What our donation will help fund

Funds received will enable us to expand our support to the community on an ongoing basis, by continuing with and improving our regular weekly and monthly activities held at a local community centre. Disabled adults often live off basic benefits and low incomes so do not have the same opportunities as others. Activities in the community' are not appropriate for adults with complex conditions, and the members of or group found there was nothing suitable for them, until they found starlight. We organise safe, external activities such as theatre trips and educational activities which give the community a sense of wellbeing, improving their quality of life and ability to socialise and feel part of something. We bring various specialists into the hub sessions, which keeps the course exciting and fresh, whilst enriching the lives of the service users. We recently had NHS cancer nurses in, describing in an entertaining but appropriate way, how to spot the symptoms and signs of cancer. Our community do not often have this support and are very vulnerable to illnesses because usual routes do not appropriately address their additional needs. We provide this service in a personalised manner, through arts and by visual/inclusive learning. The opportunities provided supports the community to reach their potential as early as possible. A route for success which ultimately improves physical health, mental health and wellbeing, increasing happiness/quality of life. There is no end date to our project as we will continue to support this vulnerable community for as long as we are needed, and are able.

"Without Starlight Arts my son, who has a life limiting disease, would not have access to any support or social activities aimed at his level of ability, and he would have spiralled into a pit of despair, and ended up isolated and this would impact his day today health. The activities and support provided improve his quality of life and have given him a new lease of life. We feel very lucky that he has access to such a supportive and friendly group".
