What our donation will help fund
In October 2021, RABI launched the largest ever research project relating to the wellbeing of farming people – the Big Farming Survey. From the 15,000+ respondents, almost one half (47%) experience anxiety. Over one-third (36%) identified as probably or possibly depressed and over one-half of women (58%) experience mild, moderate or severe anxiety. Almost one in five in the farming community (19%) know someone who has attempted to take their own life. This has a devastating ripple effect on the farming community.
Despite the widespread experience of depression and anxiety, it remains a tough subject to talk about and we therefore need to tackle the stigma associated with mental health and the barriers to seeking help.
In January 2022 RABI introduced a ground-breaking and first of its kind counselling service tailored to the farming community. Anyone connected to farming can receive free therapy from professional counsellors. This support could help between 20 – 30 people receive several counselling sessions over the phone, via video call or in person, depending on their preference. This is all completely free of charge. This type of timely intervention and support can make a profound difference to the lives of farming people.
